The Opportunity


The Vice President, People role will be responsible for leading the Human Resource functions at Root. The VPP will collaborate and partner with leaders throughout the business in handling all people-related matters and provide strategic advice to the CEO, CAO, other executives, and the Board on the people impacts of strategic decisions. This role will report to the CAO. The preferred workplace for this role is in-person in our Columbus, Ohio headquarters. A hybrid arrangement may also be considered.

How you will make an impact

  • Partner with operational leaders in the business to create opportunities and solve problems through recruiting, retaining, and promoting the right talent

  • Develop a training, performance management, and leadership development program that promotes Root’s high standards of performance, including a consistently disciplined approach to individual team mission, organization, transparency, and accountability for results

  • Develop a people strategy that supports the company’s strategy and incorporates market trends. Adapt organizational design and develop a clear vision for how Root wins both today and in the future

  • Scale a world-class employee experience and foster a culture of transparency and authenticity that reinforces the company’s values by partnering with business leaders throughout the organization

  • Lead a recruiting organization that extends Root’s talent brand and delivers top talent throughout the organization

  • Create recruiting and talent management processes that promote diversity of thought throughout the organization

  • Create and implement job architecture and compensation practices that align with Root’s values and supports Root’s strategy in the talent marketplace

  • Use data and technology to drive productivity and forecast workforce trends

  • Build an associate relations practice that swiftly and fairly handles compliance and conduct issues

  • Oversee facilities and formulate recommendations with respect to in-person, hybrid, and remote work

  • Ensure compliance with all employment practices with applicable laws and regulations

  • Drive employment and company culture practices that facilitate proper ESG recognition

  • Lead compensation and benefits strategy and execution

  • Oversee the company’s stock plan administration

  • Drive the company’s employee engagement, learning and development, and company-wide training strategies

What you will need to succeed

  • Experience building and managing rapidly growing teams and organizations

  • Ability to influence senior executives through strategic decisions

  • Experience with organizational design, including having executed reorgs with the ability to explain strategic rationale

  • Ability to craft a strategy that incorporates market trends, competition, financial impacts, and long-term trade-offs

  • Deep understanding of how technology companies function, including cross-functional product team design and rapid product iteration

  • Deep understanding of business fundamentals with an appreciation and understanding of financial impacts, experience leading in a regulated industry a plus

  • Experience building and retaining world-class engineering or technology organizations

  • Ability to energize and lead - should be passionate about the business, people, and have poise and confidence when presenting

  • Experience developing compensation plans, job architecture, HR business partnerships, and compliance functions preferably at public companies

  • Operational experience driving business metrics and operational excellence

  • Strategic experience developing impactful Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs

  • Experience developing successful total employee rewards programs, including competitive benefits offerings

  • Proven ability to drive strategy and execution of employee training and learning and development programs

  • Public company experience preferred
