The Team
We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer who can architect, implement, and scale our tools and platforms that Upstart engineers use to build and deploy our services. This is a high-impact role that directly affects the productivity and quality of the entire engineering organization.
Specifically, you’ll be joining our Quality Engineering and Tools team within the Quality Org to work on tools and processes to improve developer productivity with a high quality bar as we scale. We believe that Quality starts the moment engineers write code and are looking for people passionate about providing the tools and processes to help engineers write clean code. Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus, Austin
Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.
Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur a few days per quarter at various locations in the US. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.
How you’ll make an impact:
Scope and lead technical projects with enormous impact for all Engineers within Upstart
Design, build, and maintain internal tools, metrics platform, test frameworks, and processes used by all of Upstart’s engineering teams
Make critical decisions about the technology and architecture choices we make in building these products.
Help maintain a high caliber bar for the entire engineering organization by providing tools and development processes to improve quality and developer productivity
Drive ongoing efficiency and reliability improvements through design and automation
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:
5+ years designing and developing internal tools used by engineering teams
Strong Proficiency in one or more programming languages
Automated complex manual processes
Ability to explain complex business and technical concepts to all audiences
Experience leading large initiatives involving several teams at companies that have gone through periods of rapid business or organizational growth
- Preferred qualifications:
Proven experience developing tools and processes that have led to a direct improvement in Product/ Code Quality or Developer productivity
Experience working with engineering teams to identify and implement metrics to measure Product/Code Quality and Developer Productivity
Familiarity with CI/CD systems and deployment process automation
Experience with Kotlin, Python, or Ruby
Experience with Jenkins and GitHub Actions
Experience with AWS

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within this range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k). Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. The salary listed below for sales roles is On Target Earnings which includes both salary and commission, assuming 100% target achievement.
