What You'll Do as a Motor Carrier Enforcement Inspector

  • Documents & reports economic violations with Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).
  • Investigates assigned complaints regarding violation of PUCO rules & regulations.
  • Utilizes portable laptop & other computer equipment.
  • Makes on-site recommendation to correct violations.
  • Provides assistance where possible.
  • Maintains effective public relations with drivers, company representatives, law enforcement officers & others to ensure compliance with state & federal safety.
  • Assists other inspectors, troopers & local law enforcement.
  • Prepares & delivers presentations &/or training related to highway safety & compliance with state & federal rules.
  • Testifies in court in regards to violations.

Qualifications

Option 1

6 mos. exp. in enforcing commercial motor vehicle laws or regulations;

AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in public relations;

AND valid driver’s license.

Option 2

-Or 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in motor carrier inspection or commercial vehicle maintenance;

AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in public relations;

AND valid driver’s license.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

POSITION SPECIFIC MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Drivers license required.

Supplemental Information

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT

Successful completion of all required in-service training programs; must maintain annual certification requirements for all North American standard training to conduct inspections of federal regulations (e.g., level I, hazardous materials, motor coach & cargo tank). Must successfully obtain LEADS certification 6 months after employment. Must re-certify in LEADS every two years as mandated by Ohio Administrative Code 4501:2-10-03 (C)(4).

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires travel; may be required to work overtime, work nights or weekends & rotating shifts; subject to call out after hours in emergency situations. Works outside exposed to weather, dirt, rust, car fumes, burns from hot engines, fast moving vehicles, highway noise; hazardous materials & unpredictable behavior from vehicle owners & operators; conducts inspections in confined spaces.

This position is essential, meaning the duties this job performs are critical to the continued operations of the Ohio Department of Public Safety during a public safety emergency (OAC 123: 1-46-01 & DAS Directive HR-D-11). This position will be required to report for duty during any public safety emergency.

Background Check Information

  • A BCI and FBI fingerprint check, a background check, including a polygraph examination, may be required on all selected applicants.
  • A comparative analysis and/or drug-test may be a requirement of the hiring process.
