Job Description Summary

The AVP, P&C Operations Risk Management will play a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness of the organization's risk management and control processes. This role and the underlying team will provide independent oversight and guidance to the P&C organization's operational functions relative to practices that improve business outcomes and manage organizational risk. Lastly, this role will enable clear and accurate communications with the P&C senior leadership team along with other entities including but not limited to 1st line quality, Internal Audit, Enterprise Risk Management, P&C Compliance, other 2nd Line programs etc., providing results that achieve respective outcomes of these stakeholders.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Risk Assessment and Assurance:

  • Collaborates with P&C Leadership across all Business Units to identify, assess, and prioritize key risks facing the organization.

  • Develops insights and trends to share with P&C senior leadership focused on holistic opportunities across lines of business. This includes area-specific observations and portfolio-wide issues.

  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of risk mitigation efforts, recommending adjustments, as necessary.

  • Develops and implements risk management strategies and initiatives to mitigate identified risks.

Quality Assurance and Control:

  • Establishes and maintains a robust quality assurance program to evaluate the effectiveness of internal processes and controls. This includes ensuring appropriate capabilities and process requirements are established, including nature and frequency of audits, questions, appropriate sampling, and rigorous issue management to closure.

  • Conducts periodic audits and reviews of operational activities to identify areas for improvement and optimization.

  • Provides guidance and support to business units in implementing corrective actions and remediation plans. appropriate escalation and of issues and remediation of significant issues. Oversees the development, preparation, and submission of reports. Provides QA (Quality Assurance) analysis/advice with respect to regulatory matters related to Nationwide P&C products and operations.

Line of Defense Cross Partnerships:

  • Partners with Internal Audit to understand the greatest area of board level risks and implement appropriate reviews to provide a level of assurance that identified risks are mitigated / addressed.

  • Ensures appropriate coordination across first line operational areas when quality findings are discovered.

  • Partners with P&C Compliance to identify and address legal and regulatory findings as agreed upon.

Training and Awareness:

  • Partners closely with the PCLD on requirements specific to delivery / design of training to translate findings into learning opportunities for associates within the P&C organization.

Oversees associate management including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organization planning, day-to-day management, hiring and placement, and performance management.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to VP, Integrated Planning and Reporting. 7 direct reports that include Director level positions.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor’s degree; additional P&C certifications preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 15 years of insurance experience and leadership. Leadership in multiple technical fields. Business process redesign or continuous improvement are highly desirable. Discipline for measurement and a bias for action are preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Command skills, innovation, communications, drive for results, interpersonal savvy

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
