This is a remote, desk-based role on the National Catastrophe Response Team. Catastrophe duty is a requirement of the role and candidates must be available to work 12 hour days, 7 days a week. Candidates must be available for extensive travel to catastrophe environments throughout the entire US. When not on CAT, associates may work standard Mon-Fri business hours.

This role will be leading a team of National Catastrophe desk adjusters who are responsible for handling all peril types and possess the capability to manage higher complexity losses.

Ideal candidates will be located in the eastern/Central standard time zone and will have:

  • Prior leadership experience
  • Experience leading a remote team
  • Prior insurance field/property claims handling or adjusting experience
  • Prior experience working in on site in a catastrophe environment
  • Strong customer service competency
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

As a National Catastrophe Team Manager, you'll primarily lead a claims unit that specializes in the settlement of severe and complex personal lines property damage claims Other responsibilities include handling customer satisfaction, expense control, supervising loss cost objectives and supporting cross-functional and cross claims specialty coordination. You also may lead local recruiting teams and partner with Human Resources and claims leadership to develop an annual workforce plan.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads a team that handles severe and complex personal lines property damage claims and limited commercial property claims with complicated time elements and business interruption loss claims. May be responsible for claims that are in litigation.

  • Plans and implements all time schedules needed to promptly and effectively conclude all assigned files according to company guidelines.

  • Authorizes and/or approves all claim payments within the highest levels of authority associated with the claim, which may include litigation expense.

  • Prepares/reviews reservation of rights, non-waiver agreements and denials of coverage when appropriate.

  • Opens, closes and adjusts reserves per Company practices designed to ensure reserve authority. Determines special reserves when necessary.

  • Maintains current knowledge of all insurance lines; court decisions which may impact the claims function; current guidelines in the claims function; and policy changes and modifications. This may require attendance at various seminars or training sessions.

  • Provides consulting and training to claims personnel on claims/litigation policies, practices and procedures.

  • Assigns cases to outside vendors and counsel as necessary. Submits trial reports, contingent liability reports, reinsurance reports and other information to management as appropriate.

  • Delivers a positive customer service experience to all internal, external, current and prospective Nationwide customers.

  • Identifies, develops and retains high potential associates who have the potential for or are ready to fill critical roles in the organization.

  • Responsible for the management of associates including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow planning, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Claims Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.

License/Certification/Designation: State licensing where required. Successful completion of required/applicable claims certification training/classes.

Experience: Eight years of claims handling experience. Three years of preferred handling experience with complex personal lines property damage claims. Prior litigated claims handling preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Extensive knowledge of property damage claims, including claims workflow, processing, administrative policy, practices and procedures. Validated knowledge of insurance contracts, construction terminology and property damage. Ability to operate various claims systems and related software. Confirmed ability to meet customer needs and provide outstanding and relevant service by informing customers of the claims process and ensuring a positive customer experience. Strong analytical skills to make independent decisions and resolve issues in such areas as application of coverage to submitted claims, application of laws of jurisdiction to investigation facts, application of policy exclusions and exceptions. Ability to coordinate defense counsel in the handling of cases involving serious and sometimes complex liability and damage issues from inception through trial. Validated verbal and written communication skills for use in presenting to policyholders, claimants, attorneys, physicians and all levels of management. Proven organizational skills to effectively establish work priorities in conformity with objectives and standards. Validated personal computer skill and the ability to operation claims and business software.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Working Conditions: Normal office or field claims environment. Able to make physical inspections of property loss sites; climb ladders, balance at various heights, stoop, and bend and/or crawl to inspect vehicles and structures. Able to work outside in all types of weather. Must be willing to work irregular hours and to travel with possible overnight requirements. May be on-call. Must be available to work catastrophes (CAT) and extended deployments. Extended and/or non-standard hours as required. Must have a valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record in accordance with Nationwide standards.
