What you can Expect: This individual will lead a team of approximately 6 ES&S claims professionals. Responsible for managing and coordinating team members across various locations, ensuring effective communication, collaboration, and productivity in a virtual environment.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 10 years of commercial casualty claims handling experience; specifically, large loss.

  • 5- 8 years of people leader experience, or managing direct reports.

  • General Liability and/or Large Loss Casual experience is preferred.

  • Ability to drive results through data analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience leveraging the lean management model.

  • Exceptional and proven customer service expertise.

  • The ability to juggle multiple competing priorities simultaneously.

  • Strong written & verbal communication skills.

Job Description Summary

The Excess Surplus (E&S) Claims team handles some of the most unique and interesting insurance claims at Nationwide. Many have complicated risks and loss history, requiring us to be adaptable and resilient in our work to help customers. As a Claims Manager, you'll lead a team of claim professionals with the accountability to investigate, evaluate and resolve claims or lawsuits and specialty line/program or risk of significant value to the organization. In this role, you'll typically be responsible for managing aggregate reserves up to $50 million and exposures of $500,000 to $2 million. Developing unit plans and objectives and crafting departmental goals to help achieve strategic plan objectives will be important to success. You'll have opportunities to develop associates by coaching, training and mentoring individual team members.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages associates, including performance, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow planning, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions.

  • Builds a working environment which fosters the achievement of the highest level of technical proficiency and professionalism with staff.

  • Manages and measures individual performance and team operational results, including customer service, indemnity and expense outcomes and alignment with division goals and objectives.

  • Leads large accounts, including maintaining, developing and influencing relationships with major customers and/or program managers.

  • Handles resolution of all claims within area of responsibility and authority. Manages reserve process to ensure reserve adequacy. Approves claim reserves and payments within authority and as necessary.

  • Provides leadership in understanding and interpreting industry data and trends for a broad range of audiences.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Director or Associate Vice President. Up to 10 direct reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:


Education: Undergraduate degree preferred. Completion of general insurance courses, such as IIA, AEI and/or CPCU preferred. Leadership/management classes and/or insurance technical classes preferred.

Experience: Eight years insurance claims experience, prior management experience preferred. This position may require experience handling higher severity and complex claims and litigation.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Multi-line, multi-jurisdictional, and E&S experience preferred. Knowledge of the General Agency system, state insurance department regulation, unfair claim handling regulations, and a good understanding of tort law. This position may require specific or sophisticated skill/knowledge in insurance lines or exposures such as medical liability, lawyers errors and omissions, directors and officers, arson, property-catastrophe, architects and engineers, construction, intellectual property/advertising injury or other specialty lines/risks and/or large accounts. Ability to effectively connect with individuals and groups. Effective listening, verbal and written communication skills for customer contact, negotiation, presentations and technical and non-technical contacts.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the Vice President and HR Vice President.
