Job Description Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively with the President of the Property and Casualty organization, the Property Casualty Cabinet, and enterprise leadership to oversee key profitability initiatives, all aligned with driving the vision of being a World Class Underwriting Company. Additionally, this role will focus on capability driven performance, improving efficiencies, reducing expenses, and optimizing processes and governance across customer operations to include key functions such as underwriting, distribution, services and claims.

We will count on you to lead key initiatives that enhance underwriting performance across the property and casualty portfolio. You will be responsible for shaping strategy, building capabilities, driving execution discipline, and fostering a performance-driven culture to strengthen service offerings and deliver business outcomes beyond process compliance.

Job Description

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Partnering with business unit Presidents to ensure a holistic and consistent operating model focused on capability driven performance.

  • Optimizing operating model at the group level to drive value to our customers and partners across the value chain.

  • Leading efforts that require a property and casualty group level perspective (ex. Hercules, Property Optimization, IA Distribution, Data governance, Enterprise Risk, Quality Assurance, etc.).

  • Ensuring that non-core value chain capabilities, centralized at the group level, achieve economies of skill and consistency in approach to deliver on property and casualty outcomes.

  • Strengthening collaboration with supporting functions across the value chain. Including, but not limited to Technology, Operations, Finance, Marketing, Legal, etc. Developing and strengthening interdepartmental relationships to support more robust decision making and capability enablement across property and casualty operations.

  • Providing appropriate solutions and value-added capabilities across key components of the value chain (distribution, underwriting, services and claims, etc.)

Reports To: President & COO, Property and Casualty

Key Responsibilities:

1. Group Operations (Distribution, Underwriting, Services & Claims): Accountable and responsible for the design, implementation, and delivery of the new property and casualty Group level operating model.

  • Accountable for standing up, facilitating, and leading group level performance strategies and processes in coordination with the Property Casualty Cabinet and the BU group operations.

  • Establishes a structure to regularly assess gaps, provide solutions and track progress towards realizing a protection company focus.

  • Solves critical business problems and identify solutions needed across the various functions (e.g. sales, underwriting, services and claims) to drive efficiency, capability and profitability.

  • Leads delivery of property and casualty group level initiatives identified as having high impact to driving customer outcomes.

  • Collaborates with Finance on the execution of the property and casualty shared portfolio, performance objectives and key performance Indicators (KPIs) to address performance deficiencies and maintain alignment across property and casualty.

  • Represents the interests of property and casualty on enterprise efforts ensuring alignment, support and focus in driving the World Class Underwriting Company strategy in these key areas.

2. Global Operations (Co-sourcing): Responsible for optimizing and performance managing property and casualty’s global sourcing business delivery model.

  • This includes overseeing the global operations office, matrix reporting relationships with account partner involved in program leadership for Project Lego, delivery leads from global sourcing partners, and post-contract vendor management for all property and casualty group-level third-party contracts.

3. Planning & Performance Governance – Accountable and responsible for the design, implementation, and delivery of the new property and casualty Planning & Performance operating model.

  • Leads the design and execution of a property and casualty wide integrated planning process in collaboration with business unit and planning unit portfolio leaders (in a matrix reporting relationship). This includes overseeing business competency/capability ownership, design and delivery of the property and casualty Operational Scorecard, and providing critical business insights on operational performance.

  • Provides most critical and complex performance data analytics and business insights solutions to deliver on property and casualty profitability goals. Ultimately responsible for ensuring property and casualty is most effectively leveraging data, analytics and insights as an integrated part of strategic business operations.

  • Stands up and ensures an aligned and consistent agency review forum. This forum is intended to highlight key talent and deep dive into key identified areas of customer opportunities.

  • Establishes strong property and casualty Enterprise Risk Management governance in coordination with the enterprise risk team. This includes second-line risk management and chairs the property and casualty Operational Risk Committee.

4. Customer Operations (Shared Services): Accountable for ensuring the efficient execution of shared services across the entirety of the property and casualty organization with a focus on optimizing efficiencies and performance.

  • Manages all property and casualty shared services- including workforce management, knowledge management, automated workflow distribution, desktop analytics, and learning and development.

  • Quality Assurance – accountable for all aspects of Quality Assurance/Audit for property and casualty business operations – Personal Lines, Standard Commercial, Agribusiness and Excess & Surplus. This includes streamlining and transforming the audit processes to drive efficiencies and reduce expenses.


Breadth Across Enterprise:

  • You will engage directly with the leader of the Property and Casualty organization, members of the Property Casualty Cabinet (leaders on their teams) and other functional areas such as Technology, Finance, Corporate Strategy, etc. to reimagine our future state.

  • The successful individual will be expected to easily build trusting relationships and influence leaders across the property and casualty value chain to help drive process improvement, operational efficiencies, financial performance and aligned plans where appropriate (sales, distribution, underwriting, servicing and claims).

Team Composition:

  • Leads lead a team of 7 direct and 550 - 650 indirect reports across the teams noted above, supporting all property and casualty business units. In addition to the direct reports, there will be a matrix reporting relationship of global contractors supporting our Nationwide account, global sourcing delivery leads, and project portfolio planners (across all 4 business units). Additionally, this team includes key property and casualty Business Delivery Executives, who directs the requirements for all property and casualty data needs. As well as, property and casualty’s Integrated Portfolio of Investments to include World Class Underwriting Company initiatives.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education/Certification/Licenses: Undergraduate studies in MIS, Business Administration, or related fields. Master’s Degree preferred. Prefer technical insurance designations such as CPCU, CLU, ChFC, FLMI. PMP certification. Black or Green Belt in 6 Sigma or Lean Sigma. Ten or more years related experience managing large programs and strategies.

Experience/Skills: Property and casualty industry experience preferred. Strong collaborator and forward-looking visionary, data-driven with the ability to bring teams together. Ability to create a clear vision and strong execution discipline to solve complex business problems to enable the World Class Underwriting Company. Experience interacting with the highest levels of management in an organization. Demonstrated experience in leading teams in complex planning, problem solving and analysis. Proven experience in building trust while executing large cross functional efforts. Ability to develop business needs into business execution strategies across the Property Casualty Cabinet. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Excellent communication skills. Strong business acumen.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
