What you can Expect:

The E&S Specialty Surety Claims team is a small but growing claims unit in a unique and challenging line of business. This role is an individual contributor role handling moderately complex Commercial Surety Bond Claims.

The Surety Claims Specialist will have primary responsibility for handing commercial surety claim files as assigned. Duties of the role will include, but are not limited to:

  • Day to day handling of Commercial/Misc. surety bond claims including contractor’s license bonds; motor vehicle dealer bonds: tax bonds; utility; court/judicial bonds; release of lien; DMEPOS; and other miscellaneous commercial bonds as assigned.

  • Monitoring and management of recovery/subrogation on assigned files

  • Litigation management of assigned files

  • Professional written and verbal communication with claimants, principals, underwriters, agent/brokers, and staff.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 1-5 years of claims handling and/or insurance experience

  • Prior insurance carrier experience is preferred.

  • Demonstrated customer service/conflict management expertise.

  • Strong written & verbal communication skills.

As a Specialist, you'll investigate claims of a complex nature that may include a combination of casualty, material damage and/or property for personal and commercial lines to reach settlements within limits of authority. We'll count on you to promote and provide outstanding customer service. You'll handle claims with minimal direct supervision and may have opportunities to train and/or provide supervision to others.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handles all assigned claims, promptly and effectively, with little to no direction and oversight. Makes decisions within delegated authority as outlined in company policies and procedures. Adheres to high standards of professional conduct consistent with the delivery of outstanding service.

  • Investigates claims. Acquires medical reports, appraisals, estimates of property damage and evaluates bodily injury claims. Coordinates and reviews work performed by independent adjusters.

  • Determines liability. Acquires data from interviews with persons associated with the case, recorded statements and police reports and documents the claim file.

  • Receives loss report and resolves coverage, codes and establishes claim reserve.

  • Conducts settlement negotiations with involved parties. Obtains liability release for adjusted claims and ensures drafts are issued as payment. Disposes of salvage and collects recovery.

  • Submits severe incident reports, reinsurance reports and other information to corporate office, Claims management and Underwriting.

  • Partners with Special Investigations Unit and National Recovery to identify fraud and subrogation opportunities.

  • Delivers a positive customer service experience to all internal, external, current and prospective Nationwide customers.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Claims Manager.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience preferred. Post-graduate studies desirable.

License/Certification/Designation: State licensing where required. Successful completion of required/applicable claims certification training/classes. Professional development, such as IIA or CPCU, preferred.

Experience: Three to five years of successful experience in customer service and/or claims handling required. Multi-line experience preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of customer service principles. Insurance company operations and multiple property casualty insurance lines of business. Ability to manage vendors, apply customer service techniques, and operate claims systems. Demonstrated knowledge and adherence to the best claims practices. Participation in technical insurance or industry coursework preferred (CPCU, ICAR, ASE). Proven ability to meet customer needs and provide exemplary service, ensuring a positive customer experience. General knowledge of insurance theory and practices, insurance contracts and their application. Familiarity with claims processing and claims practices and procedures preferred. Knowledge of insurance contracts, medical terminology, workers compensation and the legal aspects of court procedures affecting legal liability for all lines of insurance. Knowledge of claims systems. Analytical skills necessary to make decisions and resolve issues in application of coverage to submitted claims, application of laws of jurisdiction to investigation facts, application of policy exclusions and exceptions. Ability to establish repair requirements and cost estimates for extensive losses and serves as a subject matter authority on respective claims projects. Demonstrated organizational skills to effectively prioritize increased and more complex workloads. Demonstrates strong, but flexible, standards and can act different, can be seen as balanced based on the conflicting demands of the position. Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively communicate and/or deal with policyholders, claimants, attorneys, agents and general public. Demonstrated leadership capabilities to effectively train, coach and provide feedback to less experienced associates.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Working Conditions: Office environment. Must be available to work catastrophes (CAT) which may include working extended periods of time including holidays and weekends over the phone or in office environment. Field CAT duty is not required for this role.
