This Director leads our P&C Commercial Lines Middle Market Product & Portfolio Management team, comprised of data analysis and commercial insurance product management experts.
In addition to an expertise in the Property & Casualty Insurance industry and the respective regulatory requirements, candidates for this role must possess:
- Strong leadership competency
- Executive presence and communication
- Ability to influence and drive accountability
- Understanding of data analysis and storytelling tools
- A proactive and innovative approach in using data to draw insights, drive partnerships, and support the business
Prior experience within Commercial Lines insurance and/or formal people leadership are especially helpful, but not required.

We'll count on you to create and implement recommendations on design, pricing, underwriting, agency management, distribution, claims, and other processes related to managing products in the field. You'll be accountable for the profitability, growth and success of commercial lines (CL) products in an assigned region.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Develops and implements a coordinated short term and long term CL product strategy (including pricing and design features) across CL middle market and small market (SM) product lines. Ensures appropriate placement of the product in the marketplace to achieve strategic goals and maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Directs development, implementation and maintenance of features/capabilities of CL products with accountability for product growth and profitability in the region. Directs projects for new CL business or new implementation. Provides direction on system changes needed to improve product performance. Validates and confirms effective technology implementation of rate changes and other improvements.
Manages the selection, training and coaching of the regional CL Product team to ensure a high degree of proficiency and professionalism.
Establishes research and product development objectives and practice standards. Ensures that methodologies and outcomes meet business and strategic objectives. Conducts research on products and the market to help make policy and practice decisions. Proactively identifies product opportunities in current or new markets and coordinates the organization's response. Conducts periodic analysis of protocols to identify changes needed and make recommendations to staff.
Directs the analysis of product design, pricing and associated processes such as distribution and claims within the assigned region.
Determines project priorities and workflow standards for the department. Monitors and manages performance measurements to ensure effectiveness of the department's implementation and delivery of product and pricing enhancements. Effectively aligns organizational structure to drive business needs.
Translates strategic plans into organizational direction to make the most of the opportunities in present or new markets. Develops business plans, goals, budgets and timelines to meet company standards, including loss planning and revenue planning support and activities. Functions as a leader on internal and external factors that influence the product line results. Works collaboratively with the regional underwriting leadership on the development of standards and guidelines.
Leads associates and provides performance management, salary planning and administration, organizational planning, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions.
Works with regional CL teams to deliver strategy and acts as a mentor for leader development. Provides leadership and vision to all functional areas of the company about product design, management and communication of financial results.
Builds regional CL product strategy/communication plan and implements throughout the organization to achieve profit and growth objectives. Drives communication to regional management.
Develops effective, collaborative partnerships across all customers and related functions to understand business developments and builds a support network to help resolve business needs. Builds positive relationships with sales and distribution partners to improve market knowledge and ensure appropriate product placement.
Develops customer service standards for department. Drives customer service performance to established standards.
Directs the development and delivery of training on new CL MM and SM products.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Commercial lines product leader; typically has five to seven direct reports.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate studies in insurance, actuarial science, mathematics, risk management, economics, finance, accounting, business administration or related field. MBA preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: Insurance licenses or designations such as CPCU, ARM, CLU, FLMI, ChFC, CFP, NASD etc preferred.
Experience: Eight years of experience in personal lines/commercial lines insurance, financial services, marketing or communications, including four years previous product management, and associate management experience. Multiline product experience preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: In-depth knowledge of analytical tools, expert level knowledge of core business functions, underwriting policies and practices, performance measurement techniques, and systems required. Extensive knowledge of related pricing, marketing, insurance models/contracts, and financial analysis required. Must have a solid understanding of training theory.
Excellent verbal and written communications to effectively influence, train others, present information, communicate with management, agents and policy holders. Must be skilled in the use of related systems and analytical tools. Ability to envision and work toward results, deal with ambiguity, solve problems, and learn on the job. Demonstrated decision making skills, identify trends/patterns within regions. Excellent project management skills.
Managerial courage and command skills are crucial. Ability to stay at-ease with senior management and present critical information to them required.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
