This opening can be filled in a remote/work-from-home (WFH) capacity or in one of our offices.

This Underwriting Supervisor will lead a team of approximately 10-12 Middle Market Senior Associate Underwriters. This team is focused on providing a high-level of support for our Middle Market Territory Managers and Underwriters, driving innovative solutions with speed, ease and efficiency in the Middle Market space.

This leadership position will require someone who can:

Qualified candidates must possess either Commercial Underwriting experience OR formal people leadership experience.

An existing familiarity with Nationwide’s commercial underwriting systems & platform(s) is highly preferred.

The following skills & expertise are helpful, though not required:

  • Underwriting experience (Commercial preferred)
  • Commercial Lines Middle Market specific experience
  • Experience with the Sr Living, Specialty Care, and/or Human Services industry practice
  • Leadership & Coaching competency or informal experience

As a Supervisor, you'll lead, guide and coordinate the work activities of the unit and may perform underwriting work similar to the team. We'll count on you to provide technical account expertise and research and develop underwriting projects as needed. In addition, you'll have opportunities to review and make decisions about larger, more complex and unusual business for insurance coverage.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervises less experienced underwriters or underwriting support positions.

  • Accepts, negotiates and prices low, moderate and high exposure new, renewal and endorsement commercial business policies. Responsible for the development, coaching, training and mentoring of individual unit members.

  • Coordinates unit research efforts. Gathers information from multiple sources according to company guidelines, to ensure effective underwriting performance. May research issues in support of unit objectives and participate on committees or special projects.

  • Coordinates analysis within the unit. Reviews low to high hazard, individual risks for acceptability and handles those within authority, based on underwriting guidelines and standards. Analyzes quality and quantity of risks underwritten and prepares reports accordingly. May review agency books of business as well as profit/growth results and trends to recommend and implement action plans.

  • Supervises, coordinates and provides leadership to unit. Ensures compliance to all time and service standards. Manages referral underwriting transactions and provides suggested decision or approach.

  • Ensures file handling quality and workflow efficiency. Manages larger, more complex work that requires working with and through others to meet overall project timelines and service objectives.

  • Assigns work, monitors, evaluates, recommends and implements based on established standards, specifications and methods. Provides file guidance and recommends resolution to complex issues. Assists manager in performing audits including corporate, underwriting, agency and self-audits. Reports results to management.

  • Underwrites new business, renewals and endorsements. Decisions at this level may require review of additional variables, using agency relationships, inspection reports and evaluation of more exceptions.

  • Manages associates, including performance, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organization planning, day-to-day management, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions for direct, and possibly indirect, reports.

  • Provides technical expertise to underwriting associates, agents and external partners. Promotes and monitors agency utilization and consults regarding policy and practice, customer service issues, sales, claims and underwriting.

  • Communicates operational plans, direction and underwriting results to internal associates and external partners.

  • Strengthens relationships through regular contact on underwriting matters, promoting profit and new business growth, renewal retention and service capabilities. May participate in the review and analysis of agency performance. Leads all aspects of and facilitates appropriate customer service levels. Follows up on and ensures accurate handling of advanced customer service requests.

  • Defines training needs in specific subjects and recommends the overall training program for the unit. Ensures implementation of training and development plans. Trains, develops and mentors team members.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: : Reports to director. Direct reports: Typically, 8-12 underwriting associates

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Completion of INS, AU or similar designations with progress toward CIC and/or CPCU is preferred.

Experience: Typically, six years of experience in underwriting or related insurance experience preferred. Experience leading or working on complex projects and or task teams preferred. Leadership experience preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Commercial underwriting policy, practices and procedures. Rating plans and plan concepts. State and Federal insurance laws and regulations. Commercial insurance processing systems. Working knowledge of company operations and products. Sales, claims, service center and legal issues involving knowledge of commercial contracts. Knowledge of applicable processing systems and procedures; customer service philosophy and functions of the unit and corporate organizational structure. Verbal and written communication skills used to interact with all levels of internal and external contacts. Ability to analyze problem situations, make recommendations, and coordinate implementation/resolution activities. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations. Ability to supervise/lead, train and develop employees in all aspects of business activities. Must be able to operate personal computer and applicable business software.
