This position will be hired on a SuccessFlex basis. You will be required to come into the office two days per week, according to the department's current schedule.

As a Specialist, Product Tax, you'll support accurate product-related tax reporting and withholding to help ensure compliance with federal, state and local tax requirements. You’ll conduct targeted tax research and analysis for assigned products, prepare and review tax returns, reconciliations and responses to IRS, state and auditor information requests, and help maintain tax procedures, controls, calendars and system data. We’ll count on you to collaborate with consultants, tax analysts and business partners to implement tax reporting changes, assist with governance and oversight activities, develop and deliver basic tax training, and use technology and analytics to identify risks, resolve issues and continuously improve our product tax processes.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct targeted tax research and analysis for assigned products and services (e.g., annuities, life insurance, Retirement plans, P&C claims). Uses analytics to provide areas of possible focus.

  • Research and prepares response to IRS, state information requests and/or external auditors. Works closely with tax analysts and consultants to identify risks and tax adjustments for assigned entities and response to information requests accordingly. Assist with penalty mitigation and abatement.

  • Prepares federal, state and local tax returns.

  • Review complex tax reconciliations and calculations prepared by tax analysts.

  • Maintain and update tax reporting procedures and controls.

  • Develop tax calendars and reviews with product tax manager and/or consultant.

  • Review and validate tax data inputs and outputs from reporting systems.

  • Support implementation of tax reporting changes due to regulatory updates.

  • Assist with performing governance & oversight functions to ensure tax compliance within our business line partners.

  • Act as a liaison with business units for tax-related inquiries and issue resolution.

  • Assists with developing tax training materials and conducts sessions for internal stakeholders.

  • Asks questions, seeks knowledge and demonstrates a desire to learn financial and insurance industry products and impact of tax on them.

  • Champions technology including AI and operational improvement culture. Uses technology in our fast paced and highly automated environment. In-depth tax systems knowledge and data management required for continued success.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Product Tax Manager/Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree with studies in accounting, tax or other related field

License/Certification/Designation: Progress toward CPA certification, Series 6 and/or LOMA designation preferred.

Experience: Minimum of four years tax or accounting experience in a corporate or public accounting setting. Insurance or financial services experience preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Statutory and/or GAAP accounting. Ability to learn tax systems and apply technology to continually improve and manage risks. Self-starter who is able to prioritize work through team collaboration and with little day-to-day supervision. Inquisitive nature and desire to learn general and insurance tax concepts; asks questions and challenge answers. Self-reviews own work for accuracy. Must possess decision-making skills for problem identification and solution recommendation. Can apply technology and tax rules to complicated calculations with large amounts of data. Excellent communication skills in a diverse and fast paced environment.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
