The Team:
Upstart’s Growth Pricing team is at the forefront of initiatives that directly impact the company’s revenue streams and growth strategies. We develop decision engines powered by machine learning models to optimize origination fees, bringing in more borrowers and improving the overall borrower experience. Additionally, the team plays a pivotal role in supporting growth partnerships, ensuring a seamless and top-tier experience for our partners.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Growth Pricing team, you’ll work on high-impact projects like implementing and maintaining features that optimize origination fees, including our new ML Conversion Model and its decision engine. Your work will directly contribute to greater borrower engagement and help maximize Upstart’s revenue. You will also enhance our Frozen Rates feature, which provides consistent pricing for growth partners, helping drive increased traffic and revenue through these partnerships.
Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus, Austin
Time Zone Requirements - This team operates across all US time zones
Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur 3 days per quarter at an Upstart office. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Grow Upstart’s revenue by leveraging ML for dynamic pricing optimization.
- Strengthen Growth Partner relationships by enhancing our Frozen Rate algorithms.
- Improve scalability by solving technical challenges, including interservice communication.
- Ensure the long-term health and maintainability of our codebase.
- Collaborate with PMs, ML scientists, and data analysts on strategic, traffic-driving initiatives.
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:
- 6+ years of professional full-stack or backend software development experience.
- Strong expertise in Python, with experience in a Python-based web framework such as FastAPI.
- Proven experience building scalable APIs and microservices in cloud environments like AWS or GCP, leveraging communication frameworks such as gRPC or Kafka.
- Demonstrated success in leading medium to large engineering teams on complex, multi-quarter projects.
- Preferred qualifications:
- Proven ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders through data-driven evidence and strong communication, effectively overcoming objections when necessary.
- Experience in fintech, particularly in areas such as dynamic pricing, revenue optimization, or partnership-driven growth.
- Familiarity with machine learning models and their integration into production systems.
- Proven ability to thrive in diverse work environments, including collaborative, self-directed, remote, and in-person settings.
- Passion for mentoring junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a collaborative, growth-oriented environment.
- Growth mindset with a willingness to learn new technologies and seek feedback for continuous improvement.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
