Director of Business Development

As the Director of Business Development, you will be working with the VP of Strategic Partnerships, Communications, and New Business, program managers, and Parallax clients. When working with your team you will provide business development procedures, strategy development, capture execution, project management, transactions, and teaming across the industry, academic institutions, and the government.

In this position, you will also is responsible for expanding our academic, industry, and government partnerships through winning proposals for new work via BAAs, grants, and other contract mechanisms.  The specific focus is on the development of solutions to near-term, currently identified government challenges, as well as longer-term envisioned research needs that are consistent with the academic research and development objectives.

In addition to that, a typical day-in-the-life of the Director of Business Development includes:

  • Driving the whole new business process from finding opportunities to finishing the proposal process and following up with prospective clients.
  • Delivering complex and significant business opportunities and transactions within time, quality, and budget.
  • Conducting and supporting complex teaming and strategic negotiations on own, or as part, of a professional team. Developing and maintaining relationships with a variety of diverse key stakeholders including the identification of new programs, processes, and electronic tools to communicate with rural and underserved universities and small businesses.
  • Contributing to the effort of building relationships between traditional, non-traditional, rural and under- served universities and small businesses.
  • Managing 3rd party partnerships including working with government, industry, and other academic partners.
  • Holding virtual and in person meetings, workshops, training sessions, and other events to connect to NASA, Air Force, and other DOD programs.
  • Being familiar with appropriate procurement opportunities and contracting vehicles based on local and national market resourcing, capability, and contracting strategy analysis.
  • Leading selected proposals and white paper efforts following Parallax and standard industry processes.
  • Planning, organizing, and managing resources matrixed for BD activities, applying appropriate methodologies and processes to deliver on objectives within specified scope, time, cost, and quality.
  • Collaborating with key leaders to provide input into and management of the Parallax’s research and development portfolio via road maps and other similar planning processes.

Ideally, you are looking for your next long-term challenge and have these skills:

  • Knowledge of research and development organizations and their business and procurement transactions including, but not limited to: DoD/OSD, SOCOM, AF, Army, Navy, Marines, DARPA, AFRL, ONR, AFOSR, LCMC, NASIC, ARL, IARPA, other agencies in the Intelligence Community, and many other government and industry research and development organizations.
  • Understanding of long term market forecasts, trends, and competitive positions to maximize advantages while executing strategy.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related scientific engineering field.
  • 10 years of Business Development Lead experience
  • 10 years of DOD experience
  • 10 years of experience in managing diverse and distributed teams across the US.
  • Ability to obtain TS/SCI
  • Capturing and closing new business to meet yearly proposal and win quotas.
  • Ability to quickly establish rapport, trust, and accountability with customers.
  • Ability to put capture plans together and collaborate with team to execute.
  • Ability to forecast opportunities and anticipate client needs to meet goals.
  • Must have strong leadership and strong decision-making skills.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Effective collaborative skills
  • Flexible and able to function well in a fast-paced environment.

Furthermore, do you have, or want to develop these skills?

  • Master's degree
  • Experience with non-profit research and development-oriented institutes.
